Beijing is built out of a single 7.8-kilometre line.

It was laid out in the thirteenth century and runs from the Drum and Bell Towers in the north to the Yongdingmen gate in the south. Everything else was placed on one side or the other, in symmetry. UNESCO inscribed it as world heritage in 2024, and the modern city, rather than forgetting it, extended it northwards to build the Olympic park along it.

01 The line first, the city afterwards

The axis measures 7.8 kilometres and runs from the Drum and Bell Towers at the northern end to the Yongdingmen gate in the south. The buildings along it date from the thirteenth century onwards, from the Yuan period, and the ensemble was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2024 under a name that explains itself: a building ensemble exhibiting the ideal order of the Chinese capital.

It is worth understanding what that means in practice. This is not a monumental avenue of the sort Europe laid out in the nineteenth century, with handsome buildings down each side. It is a principle of composition: there is a line, and the position of each thing relative to it — in front, behind, right, left, at what distance — is what fixes its place in the whole.

02 What is threaded onto it

Walked from north to south, the line strings together its pieces: the two towers, a stone bridge, the artificial hill that serves as a viewpoint, the great palace enclosure, the successive gates, and on the southern stretch the two large ceremonial precincts, one on each side, in exact symmetry. At the end, the gate that closed the city to the south.

The symmetry is what impresses most on the ground, because it is not approximate. The southern precincts sit at the same distance from the axis, one east and one west, as if someone had folded the plan down the middle. And that logic repeats inside each enclosure: centred courtyards, centred buildings, centred stairs.

03 The line does not point north

And here comes the detail that throws you. A line drawn to order a capital by the cardinal points ought to point to geographic north, and this one does not: it is rotated a little over two degrees. Published measurements of the palace enclosure give a deviation of the order of two degrees from true north at the time it was built.

As to why it is skewed, there are several explanations and none settled. The most cited proposes that the axis was deliberately oriented towards the empire's other capital of the period, far to the north, to link the two cities. It is a reasonable and well-argued hypothesis, but it should be told as what it is: an interpretation, not a documented fact.

04 And in 2008 it was made longer

Here is the part that turns all of this into something living rather than urban archaeology. When the city built its great sports district for the 2008 Games, it did not put it just anywhere: it placed it on the extension of the same straight line, several kilometres north of the old end, and arranged the new buildings on either side with the same mirror logic.

It is an uncommon gesture. The usual thing, when a city modernises, is for the historic layout to survive as a relic surrounded by a different logic. Here a thirteenth-century rule was applied to a twenty-first-century commission, with materials, scales and functions that have nothing in common, and the result still reads as one composition.

05 What Beijing leaves you with

It is an enormous city — 21.9 million people in the 2020 census, across a municipality of 16,410 square kilometres — and by sheer size it cannot be taken in. But it holds a key almost no other capital offers: if you understand the line, you understand how the entire centre is assembled, and you stop seeing loose monuments and start seeing a system.

The exercise you take away is simple and works at any point in the trip: work out where you are relative to the axis. Which side, how far, in front or behind. In Beijing that question almost always has an answer, and that is exactly the difference between visiting a city and reading it.
