In the Galápagos, a single island covers more than half the archipelago
Isabela covers 4,586 square kilometres of the archipelago's 8,010: it is larger than all the other islands combined. And it is not one island but six volcanoes that lava welded together.
Almost everyone arrives in the Galápagos with a mental map made of dots: islands scattered across the ocean, each with its name and its wildlife, all more or less equivalent. The real map is not like that. The archipelago has 127 islands and islets, of which only 19 exceed one square kilometre, and one of those 19 takes most of the available land.
Isabela covers 4,586 square kilometres and runs about 100 kilometres long. The whole archipelago adds up to 8,010. The subtraction is simple and the result does not look it: a single island is larger than all the others put together. Understanding that changes the way you look at the whole trip.
01 The sum that does not add up
It is worth pausing on the proportion, because ordinary geography does not work this way. In a normal archipelago land is distributed with some gradation: one larger island, two medium ones, a string of small ones. Here the largest takes 57 % of the total and the rest share what is left.
The practical consequence is that the word 'island' means different things depending on where you are. On Bartolomé or Rábida, island means a place you cover in a morning. On Isabela it means a hundred kilometres of length, a town of some 1,700 inhabitants at the south-eastern tip, and stretches of coast that no road reaches.

That disproportion is not an accident of distribution: it is the signature of how the island was made. Isabela did not grow as one unit. It grew as six.
02 Six welded volcanoes
The six are called Ecuador, Wolf, Darwin, Alcedo, Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul, and they are lined up from north to south. Each raised its own volcanic edifice separately, and successive lava flows eventually filled the gaps between them until they formed a single continuous mass of land. The resulting shape, elongated with a hook to the north, is the one you recognise from the air.
Of the six, only Ecuador is considered inactive. The other five are still alive. The highest is Wolf, at 1,707 metres, which is also the highest point in the whole archipelago and sits right on the line of the equator. Sierra Negra, at the southern end, erupted between 26 June and 23 August 2018.
What you travel across on Isabela, then, is not an island with volcanoes inside it. It is a set of volcanoes sharing a coastline. The difference sounds like a nuance and is not: it explains why the island behaves as if it were several different places.
03 Lava separates too
What welded the six volcanoes together was lava, and lava, once cold, is an extremely hard surface with no soil and no water. For any animal that moves slowly, those fields are as effective a barrier as an arm of sea.

The result is visible in the giant tortoises. On Isabela there are populations living free in the calderas and slopes of Alcedo, Wolf, Cerro Azul, Darwin and Sierra Negra, and the island's size together with its relief ended up producing distinct subspecies separated by those lava fields. One island, several tortoises.
It is the same logic that made the whole archipelago famous, applied inside a single island. You do not need to cross an ocean for two populations to stop mixing: twenty kilometres of bare rock between two mountains is enough.
04 The big hole
Sierra Negra is the volcano you can climb most easily, and also the one that best explains the island's scale. Its summit is at 1,124 metres, a modest height, but what sits on top is not: a caldera 7.2 by 9.3 kilometres across, running south-west to north-east, and barely 100 metres deep.
It is the largest caldera of all the Galápagos volcanoes and also the shallowest of Isabela's, and those two facts together produce an odd effect: from the rim you do not see a crater, you see a black plain running to the wall on the far side. The calculated volume of the edifice, some 588 cubic kilometres, puts its age at around 535,000 years.
The list of historical eruptions is long — 1911, 1948, 1953, 1954, 1957, 1963, 1979 — and still open. The one in October 2005 emitted around 150 million cubic metres of lava, and the 2018 one lasted almost two months. Nothing you walk on up there is old.
05 The archipelago is ordered by age
The second thing worth knowing is that the archipelago has a direction. The islands sit on the Nazca plate, which moves at about 58 kilometres per million years, and the hotspot that feeds them is today at the western end, next to Fernandina.
That is why the ages are staggered. Española, in the south-east, is around 3.2 million years old. Fernandina, at the opposite end, barely 50,000. The east is the archipelago's past and the west its present: the place where land is still being made.

That ordering also explains what each place looks like. The eastern islands have been eroding for millions of years and are low, rounded and soiled. The western ones are high, black and rough, with flows you can still tell apart. Fernandina, the youngest, last erupted in 2024.
06 How to read an island like this
The first practical consequence is that distances in the Galápagos are deceptive. Two points on Isabela can be on the same island and have no connection at all, because in between there is an active volcano and a roadless lava field. The big island is not the easy island.
The second is that it pays to look at the archipelago from west to east rather than island by island. With that key, each stop stops being a loose location and becomes a different moment of the same process: land just emerged, land colonised, land already eroded.
And the third is the one that changes the trip most. Ninety-seven per cent of the land surface lies inside the national park, declared in 1959, and the remaining 3 % is everything the towns occupy. Once you understand that the largest island is six mountains stuck together and that most of that territory is not visited, the question stops being how many islands you will see and becomes which of them you want to understand.
