In Luxor one bank is for living and the other for lasting
On the east bank there is silt, water and a city of 284,952 people. On the west, limestone begins exactly where cultivation ends. One bank was built from blocks and the other was cut into rock.

There are cities split by a river in which both halves do the same thing. Luxor is not one of them. Here the two banks have spent three and a half thousand years doing different things, and the division is so clean it can be described in one sentence: on the east bank they built to use and on the west they cut to last.
The usual explanation is symbolic, and it exists: the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and ancient Egyptian cemeteries were generally placed on the western bank. But beneath that reading lies a simpler material reason, and it is the one that decides where everything sits.
01 The line you can see from the air
The first thing that surprises about this stretch of the Nile valley is how narrow the green strip is and how abrupt the cut. There is no gradient: there is cultivated field, and from a line you can straddle with one foot on each side, desert.
That line is drawn by water. What the river flooded and fertilised with silt is cultivable; what stayed above the flood is not. Some 4,000 years ago the floodplain changed shape and the area of arable land increased, which explains why the area supported a large city so early.

The result is that the city is organised not by districts but by banks. Today a bridge built in 1998 joins them and ferries still connect them, but the logic of what is on each side is three thousand years old.
02 The east bank: where the mud is
On the east bank is the silt, and therefore the people. There sits the modern city, with its 284,952 inhabitants across some 208 square kilometres of built-up area, the railway station — 400 metres from the Luxor enclosure — and the international airport.
And there too are the two great monumental complexes visited by day: the Luxor enclosure, inside the urban fabric, and Karnak, a little further north. Both are structures of columns and walls raised from blocks, not excavated.

That the built architecture is on the inhabited side is no accident. Raising an enclosure of that size requires a city behind it: quarries, river transport, housing and food for thousands of people over generations. All of that only exists where there is land that feeds.
03 The west bank: where the mud ends
Cross the river and the logic inverts. The cultivated strip on the west bank is narrower, and behind it begins a plateau of dry, bare limestone: the Theban hills. There lies the necropolis, that is, everything that was excavated rather than built.
The list is long and all of it fits into a few kilometres: the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the mortuary temples at the foot of the mountain, the Colossi of Memnon beside the cultivation and the village of Deir el-Medina in a hollow of the desert.

The placement is systematic and worth noticing: the mortuary enclosures are down at the edge of cultivation, because they needed water and staff; the tombs are up inside the mountain, because they needed dry rock and distance. Two functions, two elevations.
04 A limestone that lets itself be cut
The Theban plateau is limestone, and that detail is not minor: it defines what could be done with it. It is a sedimentary rock soft enough to be cut with copper and bronze tools, and firm enough for a corridor of tens of metres not to collapse.
The whole plateau was lifted by faulting and then valleys cut down into it, leaving high walls and closed hollows. Those small dry valleys, without exits and ringed by rock, are exactly the kind of place you want if what you intend is to dig deep and keep the location quiet.
The Valley of the Kings is in fact two valleys, the eastern and the western, and the first concentrates most of the royal tombs. Almost all the kings of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth dynasties, between 1539 and 1075 BC, were buried there.
05 And eight millimetres of rain a year
One factor remains, the one that preserves everything, and it is the simplest of the four. In Luxor 8.3 millimetres of rain fall a year over 1.9 days. It is one of the driest places on the planet, with 3,860.1 hours of sunshine a year.
Without water there is no dissolution of rock, no mould, no rot in the wood, no washing out of pigment. What was put in a chamber cut into limestone above the flood line, in a climate where it does not rain, had every condition needed to reach us today.
The proof that the system still works is that things keep appearing. In 2021 the discovery of a city some 3,400 years old known as Aten was announced, and in 2025 the tomb of Thutmose II and three New Kingdom tombs at Dra Abu el-Naga were made known.
06 How to travel it
The first practical consequence is that the trip is organised by banks rather than by monuments. The west asks for a very early start, because there is no shade and July's average high is 41.4 degrees. The east works better late in the day, with the city already cool.
The second is that it pays to cross by ferry at least once. The 1998 bridge solves the transport, but from the water you understand at a glance what no map explains as well: the width of the river, how thin the green strip is and exactly where the rock begins.
And the third is the one that reorders the whole trip. If at each place you ask whether it is built or excavated, and which side of the river it is on, everything fits: blocks where there was a city, tunnels where there was dry mountain, and a river in between acting as the border between the two ways of lasting.
