Reykjavík is built almost entirely out of materials the island does not have.

No usable forests, no building stone tradition, no iron ore. Reykjavík imported its timber, wrapped it in corrugated iron shipped from Britain and painted the result in colours you can see through rain. The only thing it did not have to bring in was the heat under its feet — and that pair of facts explains almost everything about how the city looks and works.

01 A city with nothing to build with

Arrive with the usual European expectations and the first impression is that Reykjavík is small and oddly light. Nothing is heavy. The centre is two or three storeys high, made of what looks like painted sheet metal, and it stops abruptly: at the end of the street there is the sea, and beyond the sea a mountain, and no suburbs in between to soften the transition. It reads less like a capital than like a town that was handed a capital's responsibilities.

In a sense it was. The municipality had 139,804 inhabitants at the start of 2026; the whole capital region comes to roughly 253,000. That is a mid-sized provincial town anywhere else, and yet it holds nearly two thirds of the country's population, along with every institution the country has. The buildings are modest because there were never many people, and because there was nothing here to build them out of.

02 The island that ran out of trees

The founding constraint is botanical. Iceland had woodland when people arrived, but it was cleared for building and fuel, and the sheep that came with the settlers ate the seedlings before they could replace it. Within a few generations there was no timber worth cutting. On an island in the North Atlantic, that is not an inconvenience: it is a permanent shortage of the single most important building material in the pre-industrial world.

For centuries the answer was turf: thick walls of stacked sod and stone, warm, cheap and dark, with a wooden gable at the front if you could afford one. It worked, and it is still the image the country uses to describe its own past. But turf is not a way to build a town. It is damp, it needs constant rebuilding, and it cannot carry a shop, an office or a school. As soon as Reykjavík started behaving like a city, it had to buy its walls abroad.

So timber came in by ship, mostly from the Nordic countries, and the town went up in painted wooden houses of a very Scandinavian kind. The trouble was that the Atlantic weather here is not Scandinavian. Horizontal rain, salt, wind that arrives from every direction at once and freezing that thaws and refreezes — imported wood in that climate rots quickly, and the whole town was one spark from disappearing.

03 Wool out, corrugated iron in

The solution arrived in the 1860s, in the holds of British ships. Merchants sailing north to buy Icelandic wool needed something to fill the outward journey, and what they brought was corrugated iron — bárujárn, 'wave iron'. It was cheap, it came in flat sheets a small boat could land, one or two people could nail it up, and it did exactly what the climate required: it shed water, ignored the wind and protected the timber underneath.

Reykjavík did not build with it. It wrapped itself in it. The wooden houses stayed, and the iron went over them like a coat — walls and roofs both, sometimes decades after the house was finished. The oldest surviving iron-clad house in the city, on the corner of Vesturgata and Ægisgata, dates from 1881, and after a fire tore through central Reykjavík in 1915 the authorities pushed the material hard, requiring construction that would not burn. Within a generation the wrapping had become the architecture.

This is why the city has the texture it has. Look closely at any old street here and the corrugation is everywhere: on gables, around dormer windows, folded over corners, cut around door frames by someone working it like fabric. It is an industrial material used with the patience of carpentry, and it gives Reykjavík something no stone capital can have — a surface that is visibly hand-fitted, sheet by sheet, to a house that was never designed for it.

04 Why everything is painted

Iron in a salt wind rusts, so it has to be painted, and repainted, more or less forever. That is the practical origin of the thing every visitor photographs: the reds, the mustard yellows, the deep greens and cobalt blues that make the low rooftops read like a box of tiles from any hill in the city. The colour is maintenance.

But maintenance does not explain the choice of colours, and here the second reason takes over. This is a place where the light is low for most of the year and effectively gone for part of it, where the sky spends weeks in the same grey and the ground is black rock or brown heath. Bright paint is the cheapest possible correction. A red roof on a January afternoon is not decoration; it is the only saturated thing in the field of view.

It also produces the most useful visual fact about the city: everything is legible at a distance and at a small scale. There is no cathedral square, no grand axis, no ceremonial way. There is a low, colourful, tightly packed field of metal roofs that you look across rather than up at, with the sea always visible at the end. Reykjavík is one of the very few capitals designed, by accident, to be seen from a nearby hill in bad weather.

05 The one thing that was already here

For everything the island lacked, it had one thing in unreasonable quantity, and the city is named after it. Reykjavík means roughly 'bay of smokes', and the smoke was steam: hot water rising from the ground, visible from the sea. The valley of Laugardalur, now a green district of sports halls and gardens, was the place where the town's washing was done for centuries, because hot water came out of the earth there and nobody had to pay for it.

That advantage stayed decorative until 1930, when hot water was piped roughly three kilometres from the springs into the city and connected to a school, a hospital, a swimming pool and about sixty houses. It was the beginning of a district heating system that now warms around ninety per cent of the buildings in Reykjavík, drawn from low-temperature fields under and around the city and topped up from the Nesjavellir plant in the volcanic uplands. The hot tap runs at a temperature that surprises visitors, and often smells faintly of sulphur, because it has come from the ground rather than from a boiler.

Put the two facts side by side and the city makes sense. Everything that holds Reykjavík up came off a ship; everything that keeps it warm comes up a pipe. It is a place assembled out of a trade route and a geological accident, which is why it feels simultaneously improvised and extremely well organised — thin walls, endless hot water, and a habit of solving problems with whatever is actually available.

06 What stays

You come to Iceland for the outside — the waterfalls, the black beaches, the ice — and the capital is often treated as the place you sleep before the landscape starts. What stays, though, is oddly domestic: a street of small metal houses in colours that should clash and do not, a hot tap that smells of the earth, a window with the light on at four in the afternoon in December.

That is the achievement here, and it is easy to miss because it looks so modest. With no forest, no quarry and no iron, a few thousand people built a working capital out of imported sheets and their own hot water, and then painted it so it could be seen. Reykjavík is not beautiful in the way old European capitals are beautiful. It is something rarer: a city that is entirely made of its own limitations, and cheerful about it.
