In Seward, half a kilometre of waterfront slid into the sea in 45 seconds.

Seward exists because of a strip of water that never freezes inside a fjord ringed by mountains: that made it Alaska's gateway by rail. The same fjord that made it possible almost erased it in 1964, when the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America made its waterfront slide into the sea in under a minute.

01 A fjord that never freezes

Seward sits on the southern coast of the Kenai Peninsula, inside Resurrection Bay, a deep fjord open to the Gulf of Alaska and flanked by mountains that drop almost straight into the water. The town covers 21.89 square miles — nearly 8 of them water — and had 2,717 residents in the 2020 census.

The geographic key is the depth of the Gulf of Alaska's waters, which reach warm all the way to the floor of the fjord and keep ice from forming even in the depths of winter. On a coastline where ice shuts down most ports for several months a year, having one that runs year-round is not a detail: it is the reason the place exists as a town at all.

02 The town that founded a railroad

Seward did not grow up around a railroad that arrived later: it was founded specifically to be its ocean terminal. On 28 August 1903 the ship Santa Ana reached the bay with Frank Ballaine aboard, one of the brothers behind the Alaska Central Railway; that date is treated as the town's birthday. The city is named after William H. Seward, the secretary of state who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.

The original project changed hands several times — from the Ballaines to other private companies and finally to the federal government — until the full line to Fairbanks was completed in 1923. When that happened, this ice-free port became the most important shipping terminal on the Kenai Peninsula: everything moving in or out of Alaska's interior by sea passed through here at some point.

03 Forty-five seconds

On Good Friday 1964, a magnitude-9.2 earthquake — the strongest ever recorded in North America and the second strongest in the world since instrumental records began — struck southern Alaska. Seward was among the places hit hardest and most directly, and the reason again lies in the fjord's geography.

Within thirty to forty-five seconds of the shaking starting, a 1.2-kilometre stretch of Seward's waterfront began sliding into the sea: the loose sediment the port was built on lost its grip under the shaking, and an entire section of the shoreline simply broke away, dragging docks, railway tracks and storage tanks with it. Later geological studies rank it among the largest submarine landslides associated with that earthquake.

04 Water, fire, and another wave half an hour later

The waterfront's collapse came with a sharp drop in water level — eight to ten metres of drawdown — and, almost immediately, local waves of six to eight metres generated by the underwater slide itself, which flooded the town within seconds. The port's fuel tanks ruptured in the movement and the oil caught fire on the water: for a while, what reached the shore were literally waves on fire.

And that was not the only wave. About thirty minutes later came the tectonically generated tsunami produced by the earthquake itself, with waves again around ten metres. Seward was the only town struck by two tsunamis of different origin on the same day: one born from the local collapse of the shoreline, and another born from the shift of the entire continental plate miles out at sea.

05 How to read it on the ground

Seward was rebuilt — a fifteen-million-dollar federal programme finished the job in a little over a year and a half — and today runs exactly for what it was born to do: rail terminal, cruise port and gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. The scenic train leaving town still traces, mile by mile, the same route that first linked this ice-free port to Alaska's interior in 1923.

What is no longer so easy to see is the scar from 1964, and that is precisely the lesson of the place. The same deep fjord, with its steep slopes and loose sediment, that makes the ice-free port possible is what makes it vulnerable to the ground sliding out from under it when the earth shakes hard enough. Looking at the bay today, calm as it is, is looking at exactly the geography that moved in 1964.
