The cleanest air in the world is measured in Tasmania, and the reason splits the island in two
On the northwest tip stands a station that has measured what is known as baseline air since 1976: the wind arrives after thousands of kilometres of Southern Ocean without touching land. That same wind unloads on arrival: Strahan, on the west coast, receives 1,496.6 millimetres of rain a year; Hobart, on the other side, 565.3.

One fact about Tasmania looks like laboratory trivia and in fact explains how the whole island works: in its northwest corner the cleanest air on the planet is measured. It is not an advertising metaphor or a tourist slogan; it is a specific scientific function, and the island performs it for one reason alone: where it is.
And that same reason — position — is what makes one side of the island receive nearly three times the rain of the other.
01 An island in the middle of an air current
Between the 40th and 50th parallels of the southern hemisphere something happens that has no equivalent in the north: there is almost no land. The ocean runs right around the planet unobstructed, and above it circulates a belt of constant, powerful westerly winds that sailors named the Roaring Forties.
In the northern hemisphere, at that latitude, Europe, North America and Asia slow and deflect the air. In the south there is nothing to stop it. And Tasmania sits precisely in its path: an island of 68,402 square kilometres planted in the middle of a wind motorway that meets nothing else.

The visible consequence is in the landscape: forests leaning in the direction of the wind, bare pasture on the ridges and, in the northwest, one of the country's largest concentrations of wind turbines. Nobody installs that many machines where the wind is unreliable.
02 Why the air is measured exactly there
In 1976 an atmospheric measuring station was built on that tip, and the choice of site was purely geometric. When the wind blows from the west or southwest, the air arriving has crossed thousands of kilometres of open ocean without passing over any landmass: no cities, no roads, no continental dust.

Those samples are called baseline air, and they serve as a standard: the zero point against which gas measurements from all over the planet are compared. The station records greenhouse gases, ozone-depleting substances and dozens of trace gases, and since 1978 a physical archive of air samples has also been kept.
It is one of three sites in the world recognised for that function. Put another way: to know how much the Earth's atmosphere has changed you need a place where it has not entirely changed yet, and that place is here for reasons of pure geography.
03 The same wind that brings the rain
That air does not only arrive clean: it arrives loaded with moisture, because it comes off thousands of kilometres of sea. And as soon as it meets the island and its relief it has to climb, cools and unloads. All of that happens in the western half.

The figures say it plainly. Strahan, on the west coast, receives 1,496.6 millimetres a year, with August the wettest month at 183 millimetres. And there is no dry season: even in January 80.3 millimetres fall. The result is permanent temperate rainforest, one of the few left in the southern hemisphere.
04 The dry half
By the time that air has finished crossing the island it has almost nothing left, and the eastern half lives in the lee. Hobart, in the southeast, receives 565.3 millimetres a year: less than half of Strahan's, on an island barely three hundred kilometres across from west to east.

That contrast organises where people live and how the land is used. Almost everyone lives in the east and the north, where there is sun, workable soil and sheltered ports. The west, soaked and wind-battered, is practically empty, which is why the national parks are concentrated there.
Hence the protection figure: around 42% of the island's surface is under some form of reserve, and 21% is World Heritage. It was not protected out of virtue, or not only: what was protected is what nobody had been able to occupy.
05 An island that separated recently
One fact is missing to close the map. Tasmania lies 240 kilometres from the mainland, separated by Bass Strait, but it was not always: at the end of the last glaciation, when sea level rose, that strait flooded and the island was cut off.
In geological terms that is recent, and biologically it changes everything. A portion of the continent was shut in with whatever it contained, and several species that disappeared on the mainland survived here because the sea had put a two-hundred-and-forty-kilometre barrier in the way.

06 What this changes for the traveller
The first consequence is that you have to choose a half, or at least know which one you are in. The west is wet forest, low sky and winding roads; the east is beach, orange granite and sun. Two hundred kilometres apart, and two different climates.
The second is about packing, and it ruins the most trips. There is no reliable dry season here in either half: on the west coast it rains every month of the year, and in Hobart the rain is spread between 37 and 63 millimetres a month without a single clearly dry one. A rain jacket is not optional in March or in January.
The third is about perspective. Standing at a viewpoint on the western coast looking out to sea, it is worth remembering what lies ahead: nothing, for thousands of kilometres, until South America. That emptiness is what produces the wind, the rain, the forests and the air that serves as the standard for the rest of the planet.
