01 A volcano above the capital

Moroni sits twenty-nine metres above the sea. Twelve and a half kilometres inland in a straight line, with nothing in between, the ground reaches Karthala's 2,361 metres. There is no valley, no preliminary range, no plateau: there is a single continuous slope rising from the coast to the rim of a caldera.

02 What is up there

The summit is not a peak: it is a void. The caldera measures roughly three kilometres by four and has been shaped by the volcano's own frequent activity. From the rim the floor appears as a plain of grey ash with hardened black flows on top, and opposite, several kilometres away, the far wall closing the circle.

After the 1991 eruption a crater lake formed and came to dominate the caldera. The 2005 eruption made it disappear entirely.

That detail explains well what kind of mountain this is. In fifteen years, the summit's most visible feature appeared and was erased. What lies today where the lake was is rough dark rock, possibly cooled lava or rubble. The landscape you will see is not the one in photographs from twenty years ago, and probably will not be the one twenty years from now either.

03 The other four days

The climb takes a day, and the rest should be kept for the island. The main stop is Moroni's medina, inscribed on the world heritage list in 2026 as part of a set of six Comorian medinas. It is a maze of alleys barely a metre or so wide, with coral-stone walls and a mosque dated 1427.

Then the coast. Ngazidja is a young volcanic island and its shoreline shows it: lava flows that reached the sea and stopped, platforms of black rock, coves of dark pebbles. There is sand at a few points, but it is the exception. Driving the coast road and stopping wherever you feel like it is half the trip.

04 The friction

The first is the arranging, and it is the most important. There is no cable car, no huts, no waymarked routes and no rescue service to call. The climb is done with a local guide hired on the ground, and that is the only sensible way to do it. Nor is there reliable published information on timings or routes: that gets resolved by asking in Moroni, not before you leave home.

The second is the month. Moroni takes 2,700 millimetres of rain a year over 167 days, and there is no dry month: the driest, October, receives 97 millimetres. August, September and October are the three months with least water and least humidity. January, with 364 millimetres over 18 days and 79% humidity, is exactly the opposite.

And the third is about honesty. This is an active volcano with recent eruptions, which means the climb may be discouraged or closed depending on the volcano's state and on your government's official advisory. Check both before buying the ticket, and accept that the plan may fall through. If that is unacceptable to you, this is not your trip.

If you fit, the argument fits in one sentence: you sleep twenty-nine metres above the sea in a capital of coral stone, climb in a day to 2,361, look into a caldera three by four kilometres that rewrites itself every few years, and come down to an island almost nobody goes to. Not many places offer that, and none of them so close to the hotel.
