Of the roughly 757 mm that fall each year, almost ninety percent lands between November and March. July and August register zero.
01 Three seasons, not two
The local calendar does not talk about summer and winter but about three stretches. The rainy season runs November to April; the cool dry one, May to August; and the hot dry one, September and October. Each changes the city in a different way.
The numbers make it clear. According to the 1991-2020 normals from the city airport, January receives around 210 mm and December about 179, while July and August register zero. The annual total is roughly 757 mm, concentrated almost entirely in five months.
02 The dry winter is the good one
From May to August it barely rains at all, and the altitude — about 1,279 meters — does the rest. June and July record lows of 10 or 11 °C, which in a tropical city are very noticeable: bring a layer for early mornings and evenings.
Highs in those months run from 23.6 to 29.8 °C, with almost permanently clear skies. It is also the season when the rest of the country works best: park tracks are firm and wildlife concentrates around what water remains.
03 October, the hard month
Before the rains arrive there is a stretch locals mention without affection. September and October reach average highs of 31.5 °C with barely a few millimeters of rain, and the air fills with dust and smoke from agricultural burning.
It is not an impossible month, but it is the worst for walking the city or spending hours outdoors. The first November storms break that tension at once: they lower the temperature, clean the air and turn the plateau green within days.

04 Verdict
Go between May and August. It is the only stretch in which the weather does not dictate the day, and it also coincides with the best period for the rest of Zambia, which is why most travelers land here in the first place.
March and April are a reasonable alternative if you want green landscape and fewer people. Leave out October for heat and December and January for rain, unless your plan is urban and indoors.
