The year in Nevşehir, month by month
The climate figures come from the Nevşehir station, 1991–2020 series: 418.0 millimetres a year over 105.7 days and 2,556.5 hours of sunshine. The scoring crosses temperature, light, rain and the probability that a balloon flight goes up.
Almost everyone who travels to this province does so, at least partly, for an activity that depends on wind and on dawn visibility. That makes the calendar more concrete than usual: you do not have to decide which month is pleasant, you have to decide which month flies.
01 An indicator that is not in the table
The official operating figures give the measure. In 2024 there were 236 flying days out of the year's 366; in 2025, 223 out of 365. That is, on between 35 and 39 per cent of the days of the year nobody flies.
That average hides an enormous seasonal difference. In January around 71 per cent of scheduled flights are cancelled; in August, barely 7 per cent. Between the two extremes there is a factor of ten.
The cause is not rain, which here is scarce in any month. It is surface wind and dawn visibility, which is the only time slot when flights happen. A clear sky is no use at all if the wind is blowing above the limit.
Seventy-one per cent cancellations in January against seven in August: that is the difference between seeing the district from above or not seeing it.
02 Winter, which here is the real thing

The idea of central Anatolia as a warm place needs dismantling. Nevşehir sits above twelve hundred metres and has a full continental climate: the January average temperature is exactly 0.0 degrees, with highs of 4.1 and lows of −3.5.
The extremes confirm it. The station's cold record is −23.6 degrees, recorded in February. It snows, and the snow stays, because the average temperature of the three winter months does not exceed 2.0 degrees.
In exchange, winter gives the version of the landscape almost nobody sees: pale tuff under snow, with the excavated faces picked out in black. It is a real compensation, but you have to accept that seven of every ten flights do not go up.
03 And summer, which is dry and harsh
The other end of the year is not comfortable either, though for opposite reasons. In July the average high is 29.3 degrees and in August 29.4, with an absolute record of 39.5, and rain disappears: 9.9 and 9.6 millimetres, over 2.3 and 2.2 days.
The practical problem is the lack of shade. The valleys of this district are bare rock with sparse trees, and the way to cover them is on foot. Between eleven and four in the afternoon, in July, that stops being reasonable.
It is also the moment of heaviest crowds. With flights almost guaranteed, at 7 per cent cancellations in August, and with half the world's school holidays, it is when everything is at its most expensive and most crowded.
04 The rain, which falls when it is not needed

Nevşehir receives 418.0 millimetres of precipitation a year over 105.7 days. It is not much, but it is distributed the wrong way round: the cold half concentrates the water and summer receives practically nothing.
The wettest month is May, with 57.4 millimetres over 13.4 days, followed by December with 48.4 and March with 47.5. From June to September, the four months together add up to 70.7 millimetres.
For the traveller that has one good consequence and one bad. The good one is that in summer you need not reckon with rain. The bad one is that the valleys' vegetation depends on that spring water, so the green is short-lived: May and June, and after that the landscape turns mineral.
05 Light, which multiplies by four

There is one figure that changes the trip more than you would expect and that is almost never looked at: hours of sunshine. Nevşehir totals 2,556.5 a year, but very unevenly distributed.
December has 85.4 hours of sunshine, fewer than three a day. July has 364.5, almost twelve a day. Between the two extremes there is a factor of four, and that decides how much you can do in a day and in what light you see the rock.
That figure also explains why winter penalises twice over. It is not only cold with the flight cancelled: the useful day is short and the sky is closed over for much of it.
06 How to choose the month
If the flight is the absolute priority, August, with 7 per cent cancellations. But it is the month of 29.4-degree highs and peak crowds, so the rest of the trip pays for it.
The real balance lies in September and October, and to a lesser degree in May. September gives highs of 25.3 degrees, 13.7 millimetres of rain and 274.8 hours of sunshine; October drops to 19.1 degrees with 29.4 millimetres. Both have a settled sky and fewer people.
And there is a rule that applies in any month: book the flight for the first day of your stay, not the last. With a cancellation probability running from 7 to 71 per cent depending on the date, having two or three spare mornings is the only way to make it certain.
The year's four stretches
Means of 0.0 to 2.0 degrees, lows down to −3.5 and between 85.4 and 118.4 hours of sunshine a month. In January around 71 per cent of balloon flights are cancelled. The snow-covered landscape compensates, if you accept the risk.
Highs climb from 10.9 to 25.6 degrees and sunshine from 163.0 to 309.6 hours. May is the wettest month, with 57.4 millimetres, and also the greenest. This is the stretch when the landscape has colour.
Average highs of 29.3 and 29.4 degrees, with 9.9 and 9.6 millimetres of rain and up to 364.5 hours of sunshine. Flights are almost never cancelled, but the valleys have no shade and it coincides with the year's peak.
Highs drop from 25.3 to 11.6 degrees and rain stays between 13.7 and 33.4 millimetres. September and October combine a stable sky, comfortable temperatures and fewer people than summer.
