01 Tree cover that does not match the climate
It is worth starting with the anomaly. Bishkek sits on a dry continental plain, with 455 millimetres of precipitation a year and a summer in which July and August together total 34 millimetres. With those figures, the natural vegetation around it is steppe, not woodland.
And yet, seen from the air, the city appears covered in canopy: avenues lined with trees end to end, courtyards with mature pines and spruces, and parks with tall trees in the very centre. That gap between what the climate allows and what is there is not accidental, and it has a very visible technical explanation.

02 Where the water comes from
The water does not come from underground or from a distant reservoir: it comes down from the range a few kilometres south. A range exceeding four thousand metres and holding snow for much of the year produces meltwater runoff exactly when it is needed, that is, in spring and summer, which is the growing season.
That flow is distributed across the city through a network of channels of different sizes. The large ones are broad watercourses, with concrete banks and riparian vegetation, running through whole districts. From those come the small ones, which run along the streets: narrow channels, often little more than a ditch, on both sides of the roadway.

03 Why in the open

The obvious question is why it was not all buried. And the answer is economic before it is aesthetic: an open channel is dug and lined once, cleaned with a shovel and repaired without machinery; a buried network requires pipe, pumping, inspection chambers and finding leaks you cannot see.
There is also a technical advantage: running by gravity and on the surface, the system consumes no energy. The water comes down from the mountain by itself and is distributed by difference in level. In a completely flat city, maintaining that minimal gradient is the real engineering work, and it has been solved for more than a century.
04 How to look at it

The exercise worth doing takes five minutes and changes how you walk the city: when you step off a pavement, look down. There is the channel, sometimes running and sometimes dry, and from that moment you start seeing it everywhere, because it is everywhere.
And a practical warning is in order: many run open, with no grate or railing, right at the edge of the roadway. By day that is no problem; at night, with poor light and your attention on the traffic, a stumble there is easy and unpleasant. It is the trade-off of a system that works precisely because it is in plain sight.
