Few animals cause so much confusion on so little basis. On seeing a photograph of a white bear in a Canadian forest, the mind files it in the wrong place: polar bear, or albino bear, or some rare species found only here. All three are wrong, and understanding why is more interesting than the photograph.
01 What it actually is
It is an American black bear. The same species seen across half a continent, with the same size, the same diet and the same habits. The only thing that changes is the colour of the fur, and only in part of the population of a very specific stretch of the province's northwest coast.

The figures are worth getting straight, because inflated versions circulate. There are an estimated 100 to 500 fully white individuals, and fewer than 400 across the coastal region as a whole. On the three islands where the proportion is highest — Gribbell, Princess Royal and Roderick — they make up between 10 and 20% of the Kermode population.
02 A recessive gene, not albinism
The mechanism has been pinned down precisely: a single non-synonymous nucleotide substitution in the MC1R gene means no melanin is produced in the fur. It is the same family of genes involved in red hair in humans, and it works the same way: the variant must be inherited from both parents to be expressed.

That detail explains a scene that baffles those who witness it: two dark bears can have a white cub if both carry the variant, and a white female can be accompanied by black cubs. There are not two separate populations living side by side. There is one, with a variant that appears and disappears between generations.
And it is not albinism. An albino lacks pigment throughout the body, with pale skin and eyes; these bears keep pigmented skin and eyes, and the fur is closer to cream or ivory than to pure white. The mutation affects the coat, not the whole animal.
03 The measured advantage of being white
The obvious question remains: if the colour is no more than an anomaly, why does it hold at such a high proportion on specific islands instead of being diluted? Here is the part that makes this worth knowing.
It has been measured at the river, and the result is emphatic: during daylight, white bears catch salmon 35% more successfully than black ones. The reason is not in the bear but in the fish: looking upward, against the sky, salmon evade a large dark silhouette roughly twice as often as they evade a white one of the same size.

Put another way: in a dark forest a white bear looks like a camouflage error, but seen from under the water with the sky behind it, it is exactly the opposite. The colour does not hide it from the forest; it hides it from the salmon.
The bear is not white in spite of the forest. It is white because of the fish's point of view.

05 Why it is an entire province's animal
In April 2006 the Kermode bear was adopted as the official mammal of British Columbia. The choice is worth pausing on. A province of nearly a million square kilometres, with moose, cougars, grizzlies, orcas and eagles, picked as its emblem a colour variant of a common bear that hardly anyone has seen.

The choice says something about how this territory has decided to see itself. An emblem could have been a big, spectacular animal, easy to see from a road. Instead the one chosen is the one that forces you to understand a whole forest: its rain, its streams, its autumn salmon and the point of view of a fish looking upward.
Which is why, even if you never see one, knowing it exists changes the trip. In this forest the important detail is never where you expect it, and the explanation for what you see is almost always under the water.
