Almost everyone who arrives in Hawaii stops at some valley lookout and takes the same photograph: the flat green floor, the river, the ridges closing it on both sides and the sea at the end. It reads as scenery. It is in fact a cadastral plan.
01 Why a wedge and not a square
Land division nearly everywhere in the world splits ground into more or less compact plots: a square, a rectangle, a farm. That works on a plain, where one side is much like the other. On a volcanic island it does not work at all.
Here resources are not distributed horizontally but vertically. The summit has forest and water; the mid-slope, fertile soil and rain; the low strip, fields and fresh water reaching the sea; the shore, reef and fishing. A square plot on the mid-slope would have soil but neither forest nor fish.

The solution was to cut the island the way you cut a cake: into portions running from the centre to the edge. Each portion, narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, crosses every altitude band and therefore contains every climate and every zone of use. That let each community be self-sufficient for most of its needs.
02 What each stretch contained
From top to bottom the wedge worked in storeys. High up was the forest, which was not cultivated: it was the water factory and the source of timber and fibre. Below that began worked land, with dryland crops on the slopes and flooded terraces on the flats.

And at the end, the coast: not just the beach but the corresponding stretch of reef and shallow water, with fishponds built of stone walls along the shore. In other words, the division did not stop at the waterline. Each community had its portion of sea.
They did not divide the land. They divided the entire mountain, from the cloud to the reef.
03 Water was the axis
That boundaries almost always followed a complete watershed is not a minor detail: it is the key to the system. Had the limit cut a river in half, two communities would have depended on the same flow and on the goodwill of the one upstream. By making the territory coincide with the catchment, each group managed its own water from start to finish.
Everything else was built on that base. Irrigation channels diverted part of the river's flow to the terraces, water passed from one plot to the next and returned to the channel before reaching the sea, so those downstream received usable water. And on the shore, the fishponds exploited exactly that mixture of fresh and salt water.
04 How to see it from the road

05 Why it still matters
The system stopped functioning as a property regime long ago, but its traces are still there. Many municipal and parcel boundaries on the islands inherit those lines, a good share of place names are ahupuaʻa names, and the channels in some valleys still carry water to terraces cultivated today.
The interesting part, though, is not the survival but the idea. This division understood that a territory is not a surface but a system with height, and that separating forest from coast leaves both parts worse off. It is an intuition that watershed management has reformulated in other words, centuries later.
Which is why it is worth stopping at the next lookout with this in mind. What you see stops being a pretty valley and becomes a complete unit: a catchment, a community and an allocation of resources, all of it drawn by the shape of the mountain itself.
