There is a scene that repeats across this whole region and that makes no sense until someone explains it: you are travelling by boat along a canal, and on one side, lower than the water you are floating on, a paddy field stretches away. Not at the same level. Below it.

It is not an optical effect. Kuttanad has the lowest altitude in all of India, and it is one of the few places in the world where farming happens below sea level: between 1.2 and 3 metres, depending on the plot.

01 India's lowest point

The region is a delta landscape spread across the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta, and four of the state's important rivers arrive in it: the Pamba, the Meenachil, the Achankovil and the Manimala. They all empty here, into the same plain.

The result is an amphibious territory in which the line between land and water is a human decision, not a geographical accident. And it is the state's biggest rice producer, which has earned it the nickname of Kerala's rice bowl.

02 How you take land from a lake

The large farming areas near Vembanad Lake were not there: they were won from the lake itself. At first reclamation was carried out on the shallowest part, or on the fringes of the Pamba river, producing small plots known here as padasekharams.

The procedure is that of any polder, and it is as simple to state as it is hard to maintain: you build a bund around a portion of lake, you take the water out from inside, and you sow on the bottom. From then on, the bund is the only thing between the crop and the water.

The process had three identifiable stages. The first was carried out by private entrepreneurs with no public support. Then an 1865 proclamation gave the activity an enormous push, and between 1865 and 1888 land reclamation accelerated.

03 The wheel and the steam engine

The detail that says most about the effort behind all this is the bailing. In the early days, water was taken out of the plots by hand, using water wheels called chakram. People turning wheels to empty a piece of lake.

In time that manual method gave way to steam engines, and with them the scale of what could be reclaimed changed completely. The evolution of rice growing here is tied to whatever technology was available and to the rules that allowed it.

It is worth underlining what that implies today. A paddy field below sea level does not maintain itself: it requires continuous pumping and constant bund repair. This is farming that exists only as long as someone actively holds it up.

04 Farming next to salt water

There is an added problem that here is the norm. All of this happens in a delta connected to the sea, so the water surrounding the plots is not always fresh: saline intrusion is a permanent threat, and the region's farmers are known precisely for their biosaline farming.

That is what makes the whole thing recognisable as a system rather than a handful of farms. The United Nations, through the FAO, declared the Kuttanad farming system a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2013.

05 The king who pushed back the sea

The region's name comes from a king of the Chera dynasty, Cheran Chenkuttuvan, and means land of the Kuttuvan. That king is credited precisely with reclaiming land from the sea, part of which became Kuttanad, and one of his epithets translates as the Kuttuvan who pushed back the sea.

Another explanation is in circulation, according to which the name would come from a burnt forest, but it is not accepted: there is no historical or linguistic evidence for it, and the geology points to this having been a reclaimed marine ecosystem, not a burnt forest.

What is interesting is that the accepted version and the landscape say the same thing. The district's name describes what the district is: a place where the water was forced aside and the land stayed where it had no business being.

06 What you see and how

The way to see it is from the water, because the canals are the streets. From a boat, the height relationship between channel and paddy is obvious as soon as you know what you are looking at, and that is the whole revelation: no viewpoint and no ticket required.

The region is also the setting for the long-boat races held in these backwaters, known in Malayalam as vallamkali. They are rowed on the same water that surrounds the paddy fields, and they are the other way this district puts its amphibious geography to use.

And there is an idea you take away from here that works anywhere else. We are used to thinking of sea level as a natural limit. In this district it is a negotiated line, held up by bunds, pumps and daily work, and it has been that way since long before pumps existed.
