Albatrosses do not nest where people live. The rule is so firm that it is part of their practical definition: they are birds of remote subantarctic islands, of roadless cliffs, of places you reach by boat and with a permit. Breeding on an inhabited mainland, for an albatross, is not an option.

There is one exception and it is in Otago. At Taiaroa Head, the headland closing the mouth of Dunedin's harbour, a colony of northern royal albatross has bred for a century. It is the only known case of an albatross colony on an inhabited mainland, and it lies within the city limits of a city of more than a hundred thousand people.

01 A headland at the end of a peninsula

The Otago Peninsula runs north-east out of Dunedin and ends in a narrow headland at 45°46′ south. That is Taiaroa Head: a promontory of steep grassy slopes, with cliffs falling to the open sea on one side and to the harbour entrance on the other. The nearest settlement, Ōtākou, is three kilometres to the south.

What makes the site suitable is not solitude, of which there is none, but aerodynamics. An albatross of almost three metres' wingspan does not take off by hopping: it needs a headwind and a slope to launch down. An exposed headland, high and dropping to the sea, provides exactly that.

The other condition was set by management. The colony sits inside a nature reserve and has required continuous work by rangers to control introduced predators, because on a mainland there are animals that simply do not exist on an oceanic island. Without that work, the colony would not have prospered.

02 Three metres of wing and eight kilos

It is worth fixing the measurements, because albatross figures get quoted a lot and remembered little. The northern royal albatross, toroa in Māori, has a wingspan of 270 to 305 centimetres. It is about 115 centimetres long and weighs between 6.2 and 8.2 kilos.

In other words: an eight-kilo bird with three metres of wing. That proportion is what lets it glide thousands of kilometres with hardly a wingbeat, riding the wind gradients above the swell. Its range covers some 64 million square kilometres of ocean.

And its breeding range covers eight square kilometres. That is the species' most eloquent disproportion: it crosses half the planet and lays eggs in only a handful of tiny places, one of them this headland.

03 A whole year to raise one chick

The calendar explains almost everything else. Laying is in October or November and consists of a single egg. Incubation lasts around 80 days, and then the chick takes some 240 more days to fly. Added up, more than three hundred days of work for a single offspring.

That is why the species breeds every other year rather than annually: by the time the chick finally takes to the sea, the next season is already upon them and the adults need a year to recover. Pairs, moreover, are stable, and adults start breeding at eight years of age.

That rhythm has a direct consequence for anyone visiting the headland: there is always something, but never the same thing. In the southern spring there is courtship and laying; in summer, incubation and small chicks; in autumn and winter, large chicks waiting alone in the nest while the parents come and go from the sea.

04 From one egg in 1919 to over a hundred birds

The colony's history can be told with three dates. In 1919 the first albatross egg was found on the headland. In 1938, the ornithologist Lance Richdale observed for the first time a chick successfully reared to flight. Nineteen years between the one and the other.

Since then the figure has risen slowly, with the slowness proper to a bird that lays one egg every two years. In 2012, 60 breeding pairs were counted and the headland's population today exceeds a hundred birds. The growth is credited to the reserve's intensive management.

It is a young colony, then, and in a sense an improbable one: not the remnant of something ancient that survived human settlement, but a new site that albatrosses occupied in the twentieth century and that has held on because someone decided to sustain it.

05 The three per cent you can see

The headland needs putting in scale. Close to 97 % of northern royal albatross breed in the Chatham Islands, eight hundred kilometres east of New Zealand, and under 3 % at Taiaroa Head. In 2012 the Chathams held between 6,500 and 7,000 pairs against the headland's 60.

The total population was estimated at 20,000 birds in 2012 and revised down to 17,000 in 2022. The species is listed as endangered. With those figures, the headland's 3 % stops being an anecdote: it is a small fraction of a species that is not abundant.

And that 3 % is the accessible part. The Chathams hold almost the whole species and almost nobody visits them; the headland holds a minority and is reached by car from Dunedin in under an hour. It is this bird's only door to the general public.

06 How to look at it

The colony is in a nature reserve and is visited with a guide: the headland's visitor centre, run by the Otago Peninsula Trust, organises entry to the protected area. It is not an open viewpoint and should not be, because the approach distance is part of what has allowed the colony to grow.

There is more around than is advertised. At Pilots Beach, at the foot of the headland, is the largest little penguin colony left on the Otago Peninsula, and on the surrounding rocks shags breed and New Zealand fur seals and sea lions haul out. The headland works as a condenser of marine wildlife.

But what is worth taking away is the scale of the fact. A bird with three metres of wing that ranges over 64 million square kilometres of ocean and lays eggs on only eight, and that across all that surface chose a single headland beside a city. When you see it glide over the harbour mouth, what you are looking at is an exception held together by hand for a hundred years.
