The name it goes by says everything if you read it with the meaning it had at the time: Real Ingenio de la Moneda, the royal engine of the mint. In the sixteenth century, ingenio was not a quality of the mind. It was a machine.
01 Here, ingenio meant machine
Until then, minting was handwork. One worker placed a piece of metal between two dies and another struck it with a hammer. The result was irregular pieces, uneven in thickness and ragged at the edge, which had to be weighed one by one to know what they were worth.
The Segovia engine replaced arms with water. Waterwheels driven by the Eresma powered rolling trains that flattened the metal to a constant thickness and then cut and stamped it. The human hand went from supplying the force to supervising the process.

02 The machine came from the Alps
The technology was not invented here. It came from the mint at Hall, in Tyrol, where coins were already being struck with water-driven rollers. Archduke Ferdinand of Austria gave it to Philip II, and with it came the first machines and the German masters charged with assembling them and starting them up in Segovia.
The building was designed by Juan de Herrera in November 1583, the same architect as the monastery of El Escorial. He took an old paper mill already sitting on the river and turned it into a production hall. The works ran from 1583 to 1586, and in 1586 the first pieces came out: silver reales.
The same architect who raised El Escorial designed, at almost the same time, a shed for series production on a riverbank.


03 Why it sits below, not in the city
Here is the explanation that changes how you read the whole landscape. The old town is up on the rock because that is where you defend and govern. The factory is down by the water because that is where you produce. Segovia physically separated the two functions and left the evidence in plain sight.
That is why the same valley people now walk for pleasure was for centuries the city's industrial estate: weirs, mill wheels, grain mills and fulling mills stepped along the Eresma. The water that was useless for drinking up there was useful for working down here.

04 What changed: the identical piece
What came out of here was round, regular at the edge and constant in weight. That sounds like a technical detail and is a change of era: a coin identical to the next can be counted instead of weighed, and is harder to forge. Trust stops depending on whoever inspects it and starts depending on the machine that made it.
That is why this building is cited among the oldest and most valuable examples of industrial architecture still standing in Europe. Not for its size or its façade, which is deliberately plain, but because the central idea of the factory is already in it: a non-human power source, a process split into stages, and a product repeated without variation.
