It lies eight degrees further west than the westernmost point of Europe.
Pointe des Almadies, in Dakar, sits at 17.5 degrees west: it is the westernmost extremity of Africa and of the whole Afro-Eurasian landmass. The city occupies a peninsula of volcanic basalt embedded in a sandy coast, and that geometry explains almost everything: the climate, the waves, the port and even where the sun sets.

01 The edge of the continent
The figure is not an atlas curiosity. That forward position on the Atlantic is why Dakar was for a century the compulsory stop between Europe, South America and the rest of Africa: the continent's westernmost natural harbour, with less ocean ahead of it than any other.
It also explains the sea. The peninsula receives swell across an enormous arc, from the north-east round to the south-east, which makes it one of the places on earth with the widest swell window. The same geometry that served the ships serves the waves today.

02 A volcanic peninsula
Dakar occupies the Cap-Vert peninsula, and that peninsula is a geological anomaly. The whole Senegalese coast is sedimentary, sand and dunes; here, by contrast, the bedrock is volcanic basalt. What is a peninsula today began as a group of volcanic islands offshore, which currents eventually tied to the mainland with a sand spit.
The remains of that origin are in plain sight. The two hills of Les Mamelles, of Quaternary volcanic origin, rise some 105 metres above otherwise flat ground, and on the higher of the two the lighthouse was built in 1864 that still guides the ships rounding the tip of Africa. On the Ngor shore, the rock breaks out in black, pitted blocks that look nothing like the sand of the rest of the country.

03 The city on the isthmus
In the seventeenth century there was a Lebou settlement here called Ndakaaru. France annexed the site in 1857 and built military and port installations, and in 1902 the city replaced Saint-Louis as capital of French West Africa. That rise over forty-five years explains the scale of the port and the administrative centre.
Today the metropolitan area holds around four million people across some 535 square kilometres, and growth runs into the geography: the peninsula is narrow and all land traffic enters and leaves through the isthmus. Hence the monumental jams on the approaches and the toll motorway linking to the airport and the interior.
The result is a city with two sea fronts and a corniche running along nearly all of it. To the west the open Atlantic, with a low cliff, surf and sunsets straight ahead; to the east the sheltered bay, with the port, the fishing activity and the jetty from which you cross to Gorée island.

04 How you get around
The peninsula divides neatly into three blocks. The northern tip — Almadies, Ngor, Ouakam — is the coast of cliffs, small beaches and reef breaks, with the Les Mamelles lighthouse as its high point. The centre is the Plateau, the administrative and commercial grid inherited from the port. And between them, the corniche links the two hugging the water.
Distances mislead: from the Plateau to Almadies is little over fifteen kilometres, but at peak hours that can be a long hour. It pays to group the day by area rather than crossing the peninsula and back, and to leave long journeys for early morning.
And the best way to grasp the geography is to climb. From the lighthouse hill the peninsula reads whole in one glance: the ocean to the west, the city spreading towards the isthmus and, in the distance, the point where the continent ends.
