Georgetown was built in timber because the ground is mud.
Guyana's capital stands on an alluvial plain that lies below high tide. That single fact explains its grid, its canals, its sea wall and an architecture of planks and columns unlike any other on the continent.

01 A plain below the tide
The city sits on the right bank of the Demerara River, where fresh water meets the Atlantic. The ground lies around ninety centimetres below the level of high tide, so the sea is not below the city: it is above it.
That forces an infrastructure you do not see on a first walk and which conditions everything: a long sea wall to the north, a network of canals that collects rainwater, and gates that release it to the sea when the tide drops.
The layout comes from the same place. The streets follow a north–south, east–west grid inherited from the Dutch drainage system, in which every plot had its ditch and every ditch its outlet. Walking through the centre is walking across a drainage plan.

02 Why everything is timber
On a plain of soft clay, a heavy building sinks. Timber, by contrast, is light, rests on columns and allows partial repairs. In a country covered in forest, it was also the material closest at hand.
The result is a recognisable architecture: houses lifted on columns so that air — and water — can pass underneath, running verandas, louvred shutters, windows that open outwards and steeply pitched roofs.
The most striking piece is St George's Anglican cathedral, finished in the late nineteenth century: forty-three and a half metres, entirely in timber, one of the tallest wooden buildings anywhere. You visit it the way you visit a piece of engineering, looking upwards.

03 The centre, street by street
The commercial axis runs down towards the river and ends at Stabroek Market, a cast-iron frame put up in the 1880s with a clock tower visible from half the city. Beside it, boats and buses leave for the rest of the country.
A few blocks north stands the City Hall of 1889, neo-Gothic and timber-built, with a tower that looks borrowed from another climate. It is probably the most photographed building in Georgetown and the one that best sums up its contradiction: European forms executed in tropical planking.
Between the two, the wide avenues keep their canal down the middle, with grass on either side and big trees. It is not decoration: it is the neighbourhood's drainage vein, and it explains why the pavements sit higher than the road.

04 Living with the water inside
The canals in the centre are not picturesque: they are functional, and in the rainy season you see what they are for. They rise, fall, carry leaves and floating grass, and in a good downpour they fill to the brim within hours.
To the north, the sea wall promenade is where the city looks out at the Atlantic. The water is brown — the sediment load carried down by the region's rivers — and at low tide a mudflat appears that can stretch for hundreds of metres.
That contrast organises daily life: the south and east are the working, market city; the north is air, the wall and the botanical gardens, with their pond, giant lilies and manatees that have lived there since the 1870s.

05 How to get around
The centre is flat and compact: from the market to the City Hall and on to the sea wall is an easy walk, though the humid heat pushes you to split it between early morning and late afternoon.
For everything else there are minibuses, which leave from around the market and serve the neighbourhoods and the coast. And to leave the city, almost everything goes by river or by air: this is a capital attached to a country that does not have roads everywhere.

Georgetown does not work as a catalogue of monuments. It works as a system: soft ground, a sea higher than the street, and a city that chose to build light in order to stay.
