It is one of those solutions that look old-fashioned until you realise they have been working for more than two centuries and use no energy at all. The trick is not in the machine: it is in the clock.

01 What exactly a koker is
The word comes from Dutch and means, roughly, tube or conduit. In practice it is a gate installed where a canal meets the sea or the river, with a leaf that rises and falls by way of a lifting mechanism.
Its logic runs one way only. At low tide, sea level falls below the water held in the canals and the gate opens: the water leaves by itself. At high tide, the gate closes and the sea stays outside.
There is no pumping in the system's basic principle, and that is why its rhythm is set not by the rain but by the tide. If it rains hard just when the sea is high, the city simply has to hold the water until the level drops.
02 Why it had to be invented
Guyana's coast is a clay plain reclaimed from the water. The first settlers applied the same scheme they knew from European polders: dykes towards the sea, interior canals to gather water and gates to release it.
That scheme turned a tidal swamp into workable land, and the city ended up being built on that grid of ditches. That is why the central avenues have a canal down the middle: it is not an urban whim, it is the original agricultural plan.
The result is that Georgetown works like a tray: a long coastal wall closes the northern edge, the canals drain the interior and the kokers are the plugholes. If one piece fails, the whole thing fails.

03 How to see it working
The best place to understand it is the sea wall promenade. At low tide a mudflat appears that can stretch for hundreds of metres, and that is when the kokers are open and the canals run outwards.
At high tide the water reaches the wall and the scene changes completely: the mud disappears, the noise rises and the city behind you sits lower than what you are looking at. It is worth coming back two hours later to see the difference.
The colour of the water surprises almost everyone: it is brown, not blue. That is not dirt, it is sediment. The region's great rivers discharge huge quantities of silt that the coastal current drags along this entire shoreline.

04 A system you notice when it fails
A jammed koker, a canal choked with vegetation or a damaged stretch of wall is enough for a heavy downpour to pile up in the street. That is why maintenance — clearing canals, repairing concrete, resetting blocks — is not a minor chore but the city's condition of existence.
As a traveller, this has a practical reading: in the rainy season a downpour can leave water on roads and pavements for a few hours. It is not a catastrophe, it is the system waiting for its turn of the tide.
And it has a less practical, more interesting one: few capitals in the world depend on such a simple, such a visible mechanism. Here you can walk to the city's plughole and watch it standing open.
05 What to look for
Look at three things and the system becomes legible: the height of the pavements above the roadway, the direction the water runs in each canal, and the gates at the end of the streets that reach the river.
From then on you no longer see a city with picturesque canals. You see a city that negotiates with the sea twice a day and has been winning by a very small margin for two hundred years.
