Nashville sits at the bottom of a limestone bowl.

The ground around the city was pushed up into a dome, and the crown eroded faster than the edges. Where there had been a high point a hollow was left, and everything that explains Nashville — the stone at the surface, the salts that drew the animals, the river as the only way downhill — comes out of that.

01 A bowl that used to be a summit

The Nashville Basin was not carved out from the outside: it sank from within. An ancient uplift bent the strata into a dome, and at the top of a dome the rock ends up stretched and full of fractures. That broken crown eroded faster than the flat ground around it, and the result inverted the relief: the highest point became the lowest.

Around the depression stands the Highland Rim, a ring of higher ground that on the north and east forms a clear step, almost a wall. The basin runs some seventy to ninety kilometres east of the city and about a hundred and thirty to the south, close to the Alabama line.

Nashville does not sit at the centre of that hollow but in its north-western part, which is exactly where it drains. It is a city installed at the outflow of an entire region.

02 The stone is right at the surface

What the wearing-away of the dome's crown exposed is Ordovician limestone, a marine rock hundreds of millions of years old. There are only two large areas in the world where that material forms the surface of an inhabited region: this basin and the Kentucky Bluegrass, some three hundred kilometres north.

The soil comes from it. Limestone breaks down into calcium-rich ground that grows very good pasture, which is why the outskirts are full of white fences and horses. In the places where the rock is left almost bare — the cedar glades — plants grow that occur nowhere else.

The built city comes from it too. The state capitol, raised between 1845 and 1859 on the highest hill downtown, is made of fossil-bearing limestone quarried alongside it, in blocks weighing between five and nine tonnes. It is literally the same material that lies under its foundations, cut and stood upright.

03 The city began at a salt lick

When limestone lies that close to the surface, the water that passes through it comes out loaded with minerals. On the bank of the Cumberland a sulphur spring rose and left a salty crust on the ground, and the animals came to lick it: bison, deer, elk. The place was called French Lick, after the French-Canadian trappers who worked it.

In other words: there was no natural harbour here, no crossroads, no bay. There was salt, and where there is salt there are animals, and where there are animals there are hunters. The city was planted on top of a larder.

The party that came overland finished the journey on 25 December 1779 and put up a log fort on the bluff above the river; the one travelling by water arrived the following spring. That spring stayed a recognisable place for another century and a half, under the name Sulphur Dell, and the fort was rebuilt in 2017 a few metres from the original point.

04 The river is the only door downhill

In a basin closed by a ring of high ground, leaving means climbing. The exception is the Cumberland, which gathers the water and takes it north-west. For the city's first century that was also the door for people and goods: the second group of settlers did not arrive along a road, it arrived floating.

The river does not cross the city in a straight line. It comes and goes in tight curves, and downtown looks out over one of them from the west bank. From the air this reads better than from the ground: the built-up area is not split into two symmetrical halves, it is wedged between lobes.

That explains an oddity of the plan. In an ordinary river city the two banks compete; here the east side stayed the reverse of the coin for a long time, and the centre grew inward into the bowl, away from the water and towards the hills.

05 You feel the slope on foot

The figures for the city limits are plain: 117 metres beside the river, 354 metres at the highest point, inside the same municipality. The capitol stands about 61 metres above the water, on a rise once called Cedar Knob, and you climb that difference on foot in a few blocks.

To the west, the big parks occupy the wooded hills at the edge of the basin: paths that climb, open fields that fill with mist early on, and a horizon of low ridges you cannot see from downtown. It is the step of the rim, inside the city limits.

Nashville makes more sense once you stop reading it as a southern flatland city and read it as what it is: the floor and the drain of a limestone hollow. The salt that brought the animals, the soil that brought the horses, the rock the most visible building was made of and the single way out downhill are all the same geological fact, seen from different angles.
