01 A plain that was built
The distinction matters more than it seems. A city can be placed beside a fertile plain and make use of it; that is the usual case. Here it happened the other way round: first a defensive ridge was chosen, and then the larder that ridge lacked had to be manufactured. The agricultural landscape is a consequence of the urban decision, not its cause.

The engineering is more sophisticated than it looks at first glance. An irrigated paddy field is not a waterlogged field: it is a staircase of plots, each at a slightly different level, separated by banks that hold water and allow them to be filled and drained in sequence. Keeping that going on a flood-prone plain requires larger dikes to regulate the rise.
02 Why the city is up top
The plain floods on purpose. That is why the historic city never came down to live in it.
Here the circle closes with the shape of the city. Antananarivo is structured in three tiers — upper town on the ridge, middle town on the slopes, lower town on the flat — and the reason the permanent things are up top is precisely the reason the rice is down below: the valley floor floods.
And it floods very predictably. Between November and March, 117, 226, 312, 237 and 156 millimetres of rain fall, more than ninety per cent of the annual total, in afternoon storms building over the Highlands. That concentrated pulse of water is exactly what a paddy field needs and exactly what permanent housing cannot take.

03 The other harvest: brick
What almost nobody connects is that the same plain yields the second material that defines the city. The clay of the valley floor is dug, moulded into blocks and fired in improvised kilns set up among the plots. The result is the brick that the tall narrow houses on the slope are built from.
The kiln is remarkable for how economical it is. There is no fixed structure: the raw bricks themselves are stacked to form the walls of a hollow block, the fuel is left inside, the whole thing is sealed with earth and rubble and lit. When the firing is over, the kiln is dismantled and what remains is the bricks. The kiln was the product.

That is where the city's colour range comes from: the earthy red of exposed brick and tile, alternating with whitewash. It is not an aesthetic choice but that of the material lying less than a kilometre downhill. And that is why the colour of the houses and the colour of the valley soil are exactly the same.
04 How to look at it
The best way is from above, and any of the viewpoints on the ridge serves. From there the flat does not look like open country but like a surface divided into hundreds of plots of different sizes, stitched together by lines of earth. Knowing that the pattern is a hydraulic work and not an accident, the view changes meaning.
The time of year matters. Between November and March the plots are flooded and the system reads in full: each bank separates two sheets of water at different levels, and the reflected sky draws the grid. In the dry season, April to October, you see the green of the rice or the brown of the stubble, and the dikes blur.
And it is worth looking for the kilns, scattered among the plots and recognisable as sand-coloured rectangular blocks in a green or silver landscape. Once you spot one, the connection makes itself: the rice below and the walls above come out of the same mud.
