Almost everything you see on this island, outside the capital's core, has the shape of a plantation: the road that rings the coast, the villages spaced at regular intervals, the stone chimneys poking out of the grass. Understanding sugar means understanding the map.

01 Why a small island needed a railway

Cane is heavy and loses sugar fast once it is cut, so it has to reach the mill within hours. On an island with a volcano in the middle, that meant moving tonnes along tracks that skirt the mountain.

The solution was a narrow-gauge railway, 762 millimetres wide, begun in 1912 and completed in 1926. It runs twenty-nine kilometres along the island's rim, with steel bridges over the ravines and curves that follow the coastline.

It was not built for passengers. It was built so that cane from the northern estates would reach the mill in the capital, and that logic explains its route: it does not link villages, it links fields to a factory.

02 The day it ended

Sugar stopped being profitable as prices and European market conditions changed, and milling ended on 30 July 2005. It was not the end of a season: it was the end of the activity that had defined the island's economy since the seventeenth century.

The landscape changed without anyone redesigning it. The cane stopped being cut, tall grass took over the plots and the mill structures stopped where they stood. Much of what today looks like open country is in fact abandoned plantation.

Two years before that closure, in January 2003, the line had started running with tourists. In other words: the railway outlived the industry that justified it, and it did so by changing its cargo.

03 The last railway in the West Indies

Almost every sugar island in the Caribbean had industrial railways, and almost all of them tore theirs up when the industry withdrew. This line is the one that remained, which is why it is known as the last railway in the West Indies.

04 What to look at from the window

What makes the journey interesting is not the train itself but what it shows. From the track you see the stone chimneys of the old mills scattered across the interior, almost one per estate, and the grid of tracks that linked them.

You also see how the villages are distributed: rows of houses beside the road at regular intervals, because each grew up serving one particular estate. That distribution still organises life on the island.

And you see the vegetation that has filled the gap. The cane fields have become tall grassland, and on the wetter slopes the forest has come back. Twenty years on, the landscape is still reconverting.

05 What you understand afterwards

After going round, the island reads differently. The chimneys stop being picturesque ruins and become the infrastructure of a system that worked for centuries and stopped twenty years ago.

And the train stops looking like just another attraction. It is the only piece of that machinery still moving, and it does something no museum room manages: it travels the original route at the speed it was built for.
