01 A zone that does not fit the grid
The first thing most people do on landing is look at their phone and accept the time it shows. Here it is worth looking twice, because this is not an offset the brain corrects on its own. Coming from central Europe in winter, the difference is four hours and forty-five minutes. Coming from India, exactly fifteen minutes. And coming from China, Nepal runs two and a quarter hours behind.
There is a further detail that complicates the mental arithmetic: Nepal does not observe daylight saving. That means the difference with countries that do changes twice a year without anything moving here. A flight that in January ran on a four-hour-forty-five difference from Madrid runs on three forty-five in July.

02 Where those forty-five minutes come from
Kathmandu's mean solar time is five hours, forty-one minutes and sixteen seconds ahead of the Greenwich meridian. That is an awkward number, so it had to be rounded, and the country did it in two steps. From 1920 the official clock stood at UTC+5:40, tuned almost to the minute to the sun's real position over the capital. In 1986 it advanced a further quarter of an hour and settled at UTC+5:45.

03 A meridian that crosses a summit
Here is the detail that makes this zone memorable. The country's reference meridian — the line that sets official time — crosses the summit of Gaurishankar, a mountain about a hundred kilometres east of Kathmandu. This is not a curious coincidence told after the fact: it is the geographic reference cited to explain where Nepali time is anchored.
That the reference sits east of the capital has a practical consequence you notice mostly if you travel around the country. Nepal is long from east to west, so the further west you are, the later the sun rises by the clock. At the western end that difference amounts to a good many minutes compared with what the same clock time means in the Kathmandu Valley.

04 The world's three odd zones
The forty-five-minute offset is so rare that the full list fits in a sentence. There is Nepal at UTC+5:45; there are New Zealand's Chatham Islands at UTC+12:45; and there is the Eucla strip in southern Australia, which runs on UTC+8:45 locally and unofficially. That is all of them.
The world agreed to count time hour by hour. Three places decided their sun deserved a quarter more.
05 What can happen to you
The most common failure is the phone. Near the southern border a handset can latch onto a network from the other side and set itself to UTC+5:30, fifteen minutes behind the country's time. Fifteen minutes sound like nothing until they are the fifteen minutes of a check-in desk or a bus leaving at five in the morning.

It is worth knowing because it is the kind of thing that only causes trouble once, and always on the day you were in a hurry. And because it explains something about the place: a narrow, mountainous country wedged between two enormous neighbours with time zones of their own, which chose to count its hours from one of its own summits rather than adopt the one next door.
