01 Forty-eight thousand years
The dates have been refined over time. Radiocarbon put the intensive extraction between 41,000 and 43,000 years ago, and more recent research using optically stimulated luminescence dating has taken it back to some 48,000. With either figure, Lion Cavern is the oldest known evidence of intensive, sustained mining on the planet.
It is not a shaft or a gallery. It is a shelter cut into the flank of Ngwenya mountain, inside what is today the Malolotja nature reserve, where for millennia the rock was hacked to prise out the seams of red mineral. The site appears on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.

02 They mined colour, not tools
Here is what really changes the scale of the fact. Digging into a hillside of hard rock with stone tools is enormous work, and doing it steadily for millennia implies organisation, transport and a very powerful motive. That motive was not practical in the usual sense: what they were after was haematite, a red iron oxide, and specularite, a variety with a metallic sheen.
Forty-eight thousand years of sustained work to extract a material that does not cut, does not build and does not feed. It only colours.
Ochre was used as a pigment: to paint on rock, to decorate objects and to apply to the body. Specularite, because of its sheen, has traditionally been used as body paint on notable occasions. Which is to say that the oldest documented extractive industry in the world was working to produce something we would today call symbolic material culture.
That twist is what makes the site matter beyond archaeology. We usually tell prehistory as a sequence of needs being met: knapped stone, fire, hunting. Lion Cavern says something else. It says that almost fifty thousand years ago there were people willing to move tonnes of rock for a colour.

03 The other mine, the recent one
The same mountain holds a second story, far shorter and far more visible. In the twentieth century the slope was worked as an open pit for iron ore on an industrial scale, and what remains today is an enormous excavation, stepped in benches, its floor flooded by a lake of green water.
The overlap is entirely logical: the same iron richness that drew the machines of the twentieth century is what drew those looking for pigment tens of thousands of years earlier. The use changed, not the mineral. And the scale changed: what some took out by hand over millennia, the others shifted in a few decades.
Seen together, the two mines are the site's best lesson. On a single hillside you can see, separated by almost fifty thousand years, the same gesture: people opening the rock to take out something that mattered to them. Except that what mattered was not the same thing.

04 What to do with this
First, adjust your expectations of the visit. Lion Cavern is not a fitted-out show cave: it is an archaeological site on a hillside, with no lighting, no walkways and no signage. Access is with a guide and has to be arranged in advance through the reserve. Anyone expecting a visitor centre will be disappointed.
Second, do not confuse the two mines. The open pit visible from the road, spectacular and photogenic, is the twentieth-century industrial working. The ancient site is separate and far more discreet: a shelter in the rock. Here, the eye-catching and the important are not the same thing.
And third, use the fact to place the trip. Mbabane is almost always presented as a small modern capital with no visible history: founded as an administrative centre in 1902, a little over a century old. Forty kilometres away is a place that was being worked forty-eight thousand years ago. Both things are true at once, and it is the second that is hard to believe.
