Bahia is bigger than France and 68% of its territory is semi-arid

The picture almost everyone has of Bahia — coconut palms, warm water, humid forest — belongs to a narrow strip of its 565,733 square kilometres. Behind it lies a sandstone plateau above 500 metres and, beyond that, an interior where rainfall drops to 363 millimetres a year.

Everyone has a mental image of Bahia, and that image is water: warm sea, coconut palms, humidity, green. It is a correct image and it is a minority one. It belongs to the shore, and the shore is the narrow part of an enormous state.

The state covers 565,733 square kilometres. For scale: France has 551,695. Bahia is bigger than France, and what lies inland looks nothing like the postcard.

01 The strip and the rest

The figure that organises everything else is this: 68% of Bahia's territory sits inside the semi-arid zone. A good two thirds of the state is dry land, and annual rainfall covers a huge range, from 363 to 2,000 millimetres depending on where you measure.

At the same time, Bahia has the country's longest coastline: 1,103 kilometres, split into 143 to the north, 124 inside the Bay of All Saints and 418 to the south. That coast is real and it is long, but it is a line, not a surface.

The state is divided into 417 municipalities and holds just over fourteen million inhabitants, at a density of about twenty-six people per square kilometre. Density falls as you move away from the sea, and it falls for the same reason the vegetation changes: water.

02 Three Bahias in a row

The useful way to read the map is not as a block but as three strips parallel to the sea, each with its own climate, vegetation and economic history. From east to west: the coast and the Recôncavo, the Chapada Diamantina, and the sertão.

The first is humid and wooded. The second is a sandstone plateau rising in the middle of the state and acting as a divide. The third is dry land of thorny scrub, and it is by far the largest of the three.

These are not tourist labels: they are three separate economies. The coast lived off sugar and later cocoa, the chapada lived off diamonds, and the interior lives off cattle and off whatever the rain allows. Anyone who does not tell the three apart is travelling through a state that does not exist.

03 The coast: water all year

Salvador gets 1,833.3 millimetres of rain a year spread over about 150 days with precipitation. It is a tropical rainforest climate: average humidity hovers around 81% and average highs move between 26.6 and 31.1 degrees across all twelve months.

That humidity explains the vegetation. The coastal strip belongs to the Atlantic forest domain, and in the south of the state, around Ilhéus, is where cocoa found the conditions it needed: shade, steady warmth and water all year round.

It also explains where the people gathered. The Recôncavo, the district ringing the Bay of All Saints, is the oldest and most densely populated part of the state. The city settled where the ship could come in and the land gave two harvests.

04 The chapada: the middle step

Eighty or a hundred kilometres inland the ground rises. The Chapada Diamantina covers some 38,000 square kilometres across 58 municipalities, with almost all of its surface above 500 metres, and forms part of the Espinhaço range.

It is eroded sandstone: flat-topped tablelands, vertical walls and valleys wedged between them. The Sincorá range runs a hundred and sixty kilometres north to south, and the state's highest point, Pico do Barbado, reaches 2,036 metres.

This strip's history fits into two dates. In 1845 settlement began after diamonds were found; by the middle of the nineteenth century Lençóis was the world's leading producer and even had a French vice-consulate. In 1871 the town entered crisis, because South African finds had collapsed the price.

What was left was the landscape. The national park was created on 17 September 1985 and protects 152,142 hectares across five municipalities. Inside it, caatinga sits between 500 and 900 metres, Atlantic forest vegetation follows the watercourses, and rocky grasslands take the high ground.

05 The sertão: where water is the news

Past the chapada begins the Bahia that does not appear in the photographs and that occupies most of the map. The vegetation is caatinga: thorny, deciduous scrub that drops its leaves in the dry season and comes back into leaf when it rains, sometimes within days.

In that context the São Francisco river is not one more geographical feature: it is the axis. It rises in Minas Gerais, crosses the state and reaches the Atlantic between Sergipe and Alagoas, and it is the only permanent watercourse cutting the dry part from side to side.

Further west, at the state's far edge, the vegetation changes again and the cerrado appears, the savanna of the Brazilian interior. Which is to say: within a single state there is humid forest, rocky plateau, semi-arid scrub and savanna, in that order and from east to west.

06 How to travel a state like this

The first practical consequence is distance. From Salvador to Lençóis, the gateway to the chapada, is 410 kilometres, and Lençóis is only in the middle strip: half the state still lies further west. You do not cover Bahia in one trip, just as you do not cover France in one trip.

The second is that the three strips ask for different calendars and different clothes. The coast stays above 26 degrees of average high in all twelve months; the chapada has cool nights; the dry interior is another matter again.

And the third is the most useful: choose one Bahia and stay in it. Whoever goes to the coast finds the state they expected. Whoever climbs to the chapada finds one they did not expect at all, with sandstone tablelands, stone villages and a diamond-rush past. Both are equally Bahian. It is just that one fits on the postcard and the other does not.
